GOD - Do we need Him ?

The world as we see it today is riddled with problems. Rapes, murders and other atrociuos acts against humanity are all but common. The world is torn apart by war. But is there a common thread that links most of these? Forget Africa or Iraq or Afghanistan, jihad has become an all too common word, there seems to be no end to the Israel and Palestinian conflict, Tibet is reeling under oppression... there just seems to be no end. How can this be stopped? Where is God when you need Him? Where is this 'great omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent' dude and why doesn't He do something? Which brings us to the Epicurean argument ::

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?

A rather telling argument in my opinion.

The fact that most atheists try to put forward is this - There is no need to believe that a big magician living in the sky exists and will put things straight. Why should a person need God to follow a morally correct life? With the scientific data available today, we can accurately explain all that we see and how it all came to be. Documented evolutionary proof rules out any 'intelligent design' theories. What cannot be overlooked is the overwhelming lack of evidence about the existence of god. Even if we assume that god exists, there should be a physical impact on the universe which there isn't. The argument that god or his work has no impact in our universe just reinforces the uselessness of worshipping him.

The main problem that atheists have with religion is that it stops people from asking questions. In today's world, all religion does is hinder progress. (The Roman Catholic Church claims that usage of condoms is a mortal sin.) When the world, especially Africa, is reeling from AIDS, such a proclamation surely is plain stupid and nonsensical. Some countries in Africa have, believe it or not, a 70% AIDS affliction rate. This is nothing but plain preposterous and a shame on all human knowledge. I mean in an age when we pride ourselves to be "intellectuals", how can anyone be so dumb as to not recognise facts ?? Speaking of the Roman Catholic Church, you sometimes cant help but feel the Pope , no offence meant to anyone, could have carved out a very respectable living as a stand up comedian. A man who can call a worldwide press conference in 1989 ( yes NINETEEN EIGHTY NINE) and can unblinkingly proclaim that the world is NOT flat is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Today the only group of people more discriminated against than atheists are homosexuals. You've got to ask why? Every person has the right to choose his or her way of living be it sexual or religious orientations. We should learn to respect the views and opinions of others. In religion answers are not open to question, rather religion thrives on non inquiry. The fact that people need the concept of hell and punishment to be morally correct is an insult to human dignity.

You can disbelieve in the existence of a supernatural magician and still believe in music, still believe in art, and still believe in the sanctity of life.

If you ask "why is there something rather than nothing?" or "what came before the big bang?" and you answer "God", belief in that God makes no difference to your daily life, or to morality and responsibility, nor does it cause people to band into groups, exclude outsiders, commit atrocities or justify wars. Believers frequently claim that rejecting belief in God would lead people to immorality, murder and mayhem. What little research there is so far suggests quite the reverse. A recent study comparing developed nations showed that the more religious nations also had higher rates of murder, suicide, teenage pregnancy and violent crime - precisely those behaviours that most religions prohibit. In an age when science has answers to most questions, the belief in an extremely perfect being to have created us is absolutely irrational because if you think about it who, by the way, created the creator? Because if someone created the creator, then that someone must be greater then the creator. But then someone must have created the guy who created the creator, who has to be, logically, even greater... and this goes on.

Douglas Adams : "Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?"

I feel every person should be allowed to decide upon his religious orientation. As Richard Dawkins has said, we are (atleast 99% of us are) believers of some religion which we did not choose but were born into. To say that I am a Hindu is probably incorrect, what should be said is that I was born to parents who are hindu. Every school asks a child is religion. Well is it not ridiculous to imagine that a kid would have a definite viewpoint on this subject?

My last post was supposedly a bit random, well this one has a clear theme and is not about being funny. I feel this is an issue that must be faced by everyone. What I've regularly observed is that as soon as religion becomes involved we throw logical thinking out of the window, which is the worst thing we can do, for once we let our analyzing power get clouded there is no saying what might come to pass. The views expressed are solely mine and no harm is meant to any persons sensibilities though all comments and views on this issue are welcome.

When it comes to bullshit, big-time, major league bullshit, you have to stand in awe of the all-time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims, religion. No contest. No contest. Religion. Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, you talk about a good bullshit story. Holy Shit!

But I want you to know something, this is sincere, I want you to know, when it comes to believing in God, I really tried. I really, really tried. I tried to believe that there is a God, who created each of us in His own image and likeness, loves us very much, and keeps a close eye on things. I really tried to believe that, but I gotta tell you, the longer you live, the more you look around, the more you realize, something is fucked up.

Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed. Results like these do not belong on the résumé of a Supreme Being. This is the kind of shit you'd expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. And just between you and me, in any decently-run universe, this guy would've been out on his all-powerful ass a long time ago. And by the way, I say "this guy", because I firmly believe, looking at these results, that if there is a God, it has to be a man.

A rather long post but with questions that merit more than passing thought. Other than the "atrociuos" on the first line, its well written and worth the read. Keep it up!

very thoughtful and concise.. but nothing new for an agnostic like me though. Though i have been very fond of mythology, but never has religion attracted me, and believe me, when you get to the epicenter of it all, it is a disgusting group of selfless people who are exploiting people, and are a disgrace to today's ever-aware world.

well....gud topic..sumthing tat everyone would have an opinion... bt one thing tat strikes me is that the fundamental basis of ur argument is that religion does not allow u the fundamental freedoms that everyone should have...
however the post and a comment most probably end up wid the conclusion that god doesnt exist and that there can be only a futile argument in tat aspect.
bt isnt tat wrong too???
isnt that stopping people from asking a whole lot of questions???

I believe that no doubt that religion has its pitfalls but ultimately it does have it's advantages.. suppose i take my own example... I dont consume meat or any such products on some days... some religious custom..it doesnt change the fact that i kill another being to satiate my hunger on anoder day... but doesnt tat also mean that I am able to control my urges and desires for whatever whimsical reason.

I believe that you cannot conclusively say whether God exists or not.... but what I can say most definitely is that the belief of a Supreme Being watching me and noting my faults is mind-boggling. It defeats normal logic but also opens the aspect of divinity. As Sarojini Naidu says " We are but the colours of God's prism? . God isn't one. We are our own God and Devil. We decide which aspect we want to believe in.
I leave you with this last joinder.... what caused you to start questioning the presence of Almighty ... no it isnt the truck-loads of scientific information put before us..it was your inner belief.. what caused it to ask that question aloud.....
I would say... maybe God himself!!!

well thnx for ur opinion utsav... to clarify i just stated that there is no god worth worshipping as opposed to whether such a being exists or not. coming to ur example about not consuming meta on certain days...well it has nothing to do with religious belief... its dependant on a person whether or not he/she wants to consume meat or not... u have thousands of vegetarians who are veans by choice and not by religious beliefs... its just a fools argument to say that it is only just religious belief that stops u from consuming meat (though i find no logic in the fact that religions permit u to kill another being and eat it on monday but if you do it on tuesday then you "go to Hell" , but thats not really the point)....
we are sufficiently evolved so as to control our "whims and desires of killing" but then as i said earier its just my opinion....
as to the fact that maybe it was god who "lead" me to question these things....i believe that any evolved creature with a sufficient amount of intelligence is bound to look around at the world and ask the same question that i did... and if it was god who really made me question him.. i do belive that he would not let me come to the conclusion that i have... if he did then..well then i stick to my point of not worshipping that guy..

well to agen say this..... i dun have a conclusive belief on this topic.. i therefore take a neutral stand....i dun question the fact that we can explain all our evolutionary acts wid concrete evidence, but is that evidence enough to dispense wid our notion of God watsoever???

What i meant by that example was precisely wat u mean. However i look it from the angle that our belief in the theory the existence of God may cause us to do 1 good deed. I believe that the act is more important than the reason. If something good comes out of believing in him, den y nt believe in him?

And the fact that you question it points to a greater Being. Let me get into a philosphical question here. Well.... your present state has been affected hugely by your parentage, childhood memories and the society you live in. But who decided that it would be you precisely who would be exposed to all this and not sumone else???
Who decided that the urchin on the street would never be able to gain this much of knowledge to ever bother asking this question??? You... nopes.. neither me.. nor neone else. Also you cant say that the person who would have been brought up wid in a similar environ would have ended up lyk u, asking the very same questions.
If God doesnt run this puppet-show, who does??? How come such unconnected things add up to cause such a significant impact on your life???? How come a million wrongs sumhow add up and have a common answer??
Yet it can all be a matter of co-incidence bt the odds wouldn be too gud on tat.

While I dont say that the presence of God is imperative, I dun say that his absence is necessary either. What i say is that his absence leaves an unmistakable void. Acknowledging his presence is like acknowledging the fact that there are sum questions that are debatable but which cant be conclusively answered. It is God at work there. It is his idea of a practical joke. He almost leads us on the trail to question his presence before removing the tracks in the middle. What we come with are nuthin bt our interpretations of the road ahead. It may be co-incidence....but i re-enforce the odds arent that great and normal probability wouldn give u a chance against a million.

Protik Roychowdhury said...

well its again ur belief.. and u r entitled to it... but as to all ur questions about why i ask this question n not the guy on the street...one answer "PROPER EDUCATION" ...
anyway it seems uve read neither my post nor my reply.. i repeatedly stress that im not questioning the existence..im questioning the point of worshipping and blindly believing something which has no impact on us...again my belief...

as to the good deeds point...thats what the whole blog was about...u insult human dignity by assuming u need someone to guide you to do good.

anyway again entirely my view...

I dont disgrace humanity. Im just sure that a majority of it need counselling...if religion offers it....im not against it..
As for your blog and reply, i did read it, dont worry. I sed in my post that we address the same question in a different perspective. I say that sumone is pulling the strings becoz i dun wanna bet on that high a co-incidence ratio. You say that wen you can explain everything, y do u need to woiship sumone? I dont say that worshipping is necessary. I say that the belief is necessary.

as for blindly following the faith... well you and I are lucky enough that education developed a rational mind that can debate on such topics. Luk around you. We are surrounded by a host of dumb-witted folk. If worshipping God causes them to make any sort of a positive impact on the world, I am willing to play along even if i dun suscribe to the idea.
And we all need a helping hand.It may not be God, but at all stages in our life we need the support of different people in our life. It is the basis of our society that we depend upon a host of other people.

For you, your views hold sway over a pragmatic approach. My approach is pragmatic is simply because the religious vastly outnumber those like you. If on the basis of God alone i can make each do a good deed everyday, den y not? Ultimately it is the good of the world that we want, dont we?? As u sed... my view....

Protik Roychowdhury said...

firstly thnx for this discussion ...as said earlier, my opinion is mine, urs is urs, n anyway my blog is accessible to u n me n not those millions of others whom u refer to...
so maybe im justified if i want to be pragmatic about it...again my opinion

Life (?), the Universe (??) and Everything Else...

The title with those well protected question marks itself clearly shows that how strongly YOU need HIM. If you really want to remove those question marks..you need to have an answer & the answer lies in absolute truth, the naked truth, the ultimate reality.

Its a quest which is actually haunting you. Unmasking the secrets of life & the universe is actually in other words is realizing the absolute, which has been clothed by the deep layers of our minds.

GOD - Do we need him.?. Yes, until all question marks that have been imprinted on your self do not vanish, until you don't find a permanent bliss without any question marks then believe it or not you are in search of SOME THING, no matter how strongly you deny. And that search actually is the search for HIM, the truth..the only one

Now choice is yours call him GOD or whatever you like, it hardly makes any difference. In your words, don't go by any set notions about GOD rather explore the ultimate truth without which even you don't exist.

Can you deny your existence?
